Dr. McAdams is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He joined the department in January of 2008 after serving as an Associate (2005-2007) and Assistant Professor (1999-2005) of Mechanical Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He teaches undergraduate courses in design methods, biologically inspired design, and machine element design and graduate courses in product design and dynamics. Dr. McAdams’ research interests lie in the area of design theory and methodology, with a specific focus on functional modeling, concept synthesis innovation, biologically inspired design methods, inclusive design, and technology evolution as applied to product design.
He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in August 1999. His dissertation, titled Functional Tolerance Design: Foundations, Tools, and Techniques, was supervised by Dr. Kristin L. Wood. He also earned an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California in June 1994, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude, from The University of Texas at Austin in May 1992.
